MiraDry® uses microwave energy to safely destroy the sweat glands under the arms that significantly reduce the sweat and unpleasant odors.
Axillary sweat and annoying odors
MiraDry® is for patients who want to reduce the sweat under the arms for personal comfort or to treat axillary hyperhidrosis.
It is also the only treatment that removes annoying odors.
A study has shown that the most common problems with underarm sweating are as follow:
- Impact on the choice of clothes: 84%
- Embarrassment: 71%
- Prevents working or studying: 52%
- Impact on work and leisure activities: 45%
The miraDry® system is suitable for all skin phototypes.
The treatment is not recommended for pregnant women and people who have undergone surgical removal of the underarm lymph nodes.
How a miraDry® session works
The miraDry® device is a non-invasive treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
A session lasts about an hour. A single session is sufficient in most cases. For people who suffer from excessive hyperhidrosis, it can be sometimes necessary to do a second session three months later.
It is recommended that patients shave their armpit hair four to six days prior to a session.
The doctor uses a marker pen on the armpits to determine the area to be treated and the points of anaesthesia.
MiraDry® has developed a specific syringe adapter for local patient anesthesia on each side of the armpits.
This has a double role:
- Makes the procedure completely painless for the patient during the session
- Promotes the diffusion of energy at the proper depth under the skin since the microwaves propagate optimally in aqueous medium
The patient feels a slight aspiration when the skin and glands are raised to the surface.
MiraDry® sends ultra-short heat waves of sixty degrees to a depth of four millimeters. This energy destroys the apocrine and eccrine sweat glands by a thermolysis effect without damaging the surrounding tissues.
The patient also notices a reduction of 60% of the hair under the armpits.
Throughout the procedure, the skin is protected by cooling, which avoids any burning sensation.
Immediately after the session, the doctor applies ice packs under the arms for twenty minutes to reduce the risk of oedema.
The effects of microwave energy
A half day of rest is recommended after a MiraDry® treatment. The armpits are red, swollen and slightly painful.
The anesthetic liquid is eliminated in six to eight hours. Back at home, the patient continues to apply the ice bags under the armpits every twenty minutes for two days.
The doctor can also prescribe a pain killer.
It is advised not to drive the same day and not to exercise for a week.
The patient can bathe normally, but in order prevent any risk of infection, avoid swimming for seven days.
Results
MiraDry® removes 82% of the sweat glands under the arms. Once removed, these glands do not regenerate.
The disappearance of the sweat glands does not affect the thermoregulation of the body because they make only for 2% of all four million glands distributed throughout the body.
The body is not going to sweat more abundantly in other places to "compensate".
