The World Health Organisation has recognized obesity as a chronic illness since 1997. Obesity is when the body undergoes a disproportionate increase in mass compared to the person’s build.
In order to slim down, the obese person must adopt a healthier diet and exercise regularly. In addition to a healthy diet, obese people can also undergo cosmetic surgery.
Weight loss: what are excess weight and obesity?
Excess weight and obesity are caused by too much fat in the body following an imbalance between an elevated daily calorific intake and energy expenditure. The body takes in more than it expends and stores the part of the surplus it has not been able to burn.
Thus, when a person is overweight or obese, there is an overload of fat tissue or body fat. This is not to be confused with lean mass, which corresponds to the weight of muscles and organs.
There are two indicators that enable the medical professional to measure if someone is overweight or obese:
- Body Mass Index (BMI): the body mass index is calculated by dividing the person's weight by height squared.
- Body Fat Index (BFI): the body fat index is calculated by measuring the hip circumference around the navel. The waist circumference is then compared with the person's height.
If a person’s BMI is between 25 and 30 kg/m2, the person is overweight. But if their BMI is over 30 kg/m2, they are obese.
If a woman has a BFI between 33 and 38 %, she is overweight. 39 % or over, and she is obese. For a man, the BFI should be between 20 and 25 % for him to be considered overweight. Above that he is obese.
In 2015, 54 % of men and 44 % of women were overweight or obese in France.
Why lose weight?
The causes of excess weight and obesity vary from person to person however, the main cause of this excess fat is a diet that is too calorific and fatty.
Some people can also be genetically predisposed to obesity. This means some people naturally tend to store more fat than others.
Lack of exercise is also a factor that can cause obesity. If you expend less energy than you consume, this causes the excess fat to be stored.
In any case, obesity and excess weight can have a considerable impact on the health of sufferers. It is, therefore, necessary for these people to lose weight to avoid the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure.
Losing weight: how should you go about it?
The only solution to lose weight is to increase your exercise and adopt a more balanced diet however, it is sometimes difficult for people who have always followed a rich diet to change their habits.
So, to help obese or overweight people change their lifestyle, a gastric balloon can be used to help them. This is an effective treatment to help people lose weight while learning to eat more healthy.
