Breasts are often subject to many insecurities such as when they are too flat, they can cause psychological discomfort for women. Nevertheless, when they are too big, they can also be the source of many physical problems. Therefore, some women with opulent breasts can use breast reduction surgery to find a harmonious silhouette and a permanent comfort of life
Breast reduction: What is it?
Excessive breast volume in a woman is called breast hypertrophy. It can have several causes. Indeed, the breasts can be too large at the end of breast growth, during puberty or after pregnancy or a significant weight gain. Often, a mammary ptosis may be associated with breast hypertrophy. The breasts are sagging because of the weight of the breast.
Breast reduction can be performed as soon as puberty is over. This procedure consists of reducing the volume of the breasts by removing a little mammary gland. The breasts are then reassembled and the skin is redraped to ensure optimal breasts holding and to give shape to the chest.

Breast reduction: how the procedure works
Before the surgery, the surgeon makes a first consultation with you. This allows them to know your background, but also your needs and your problem.
On the day of procedure, the breast reduction is done according to several distinct phases:
- The surgeon begins by defining the area of the procedure with a surgical marker
- Then removes the excess mammary gland and puts back the gland of the breasts
- Then, it redraws the skin allowing to curve and maintain the new breasts. A possible asymmetry of the breast can also be corrected by your surgeon at simultaneously with the breast reduction procedure
- The surgeon then reduces the areola and repositions it. Same for the nipples.
- The surgeon proceeds by suturing the skin using resorbable threads and drains are placed to prevent the appearance of hematoma.
- Finally, the surgeon applies a shaping dressing on the scars.
Breast reduction: anaesthesia, duration, hospitalisation
Breast reduction lasts between two and three hours and is done under general anesthesia. The patient will have to stay one or two nights in the clinic.
Breast reduction: Before/After
The day after the breast reduction intervention, the curve of the new breast is already clearly visible. The breasts are reduced, perfectly symmetrical and positioned higher. You can be aware of the before / after breast reduction.
After three months, once the edema has resorbed, the breasts become less bulging and the breast tissues become softer. Six months later the shape and the volume of the breasts will be definitive. The process of scaringn will be completely finished after one year.
The result is permanent however, be careful of significant weight loss after the procedure since it can cause flabby breasts.
Once the woman is sound in mind and at ease with her body she feels lighter and freer in her movements. She can dress as she wishes, play any sport and her back, shoulders and neck feel totally comfortable once more. She regains her self-confidence vis-a-vis her intimate life and avoids the often inappropriate looks and comments about her chest.
A pregnancy is allowed six months after the reduction surgery although it is advisable to do this procedure when the woman does not want more children. The possibility of breastfeeding is not guaranteed because the milk ducts may have been cut during the procedure.
