Men also have mammary glands in their breasts. However, when there is a swelling of the mammary gland in men, it is called gynecomastia. This abnormal development of the mammary gland can cause a lot of hang-ups. Men often have breast surgery to remove their breasts and restore their physical and psychological well-being.
What is gynecomastia?
In men, the chest may swell due to a hormonal imbalance or even after taking hormonal treatment such as steroids. Gynecomastia can also be a side effect of some medications. Whatever its cause, men can feel psychologically damaged by the appearance of small breasts.
There are different types of gynecomastia:
- Unilateral gynecomastia, which makes the two breasts look asymmetrical. You can see that one breast is more swollen than the other
- Diffuse, dendritic or nodular gynecomastia. When the gynecomastia is nodular, it is perfectly well-defined. If it is dendritic then it takes on a triangular mass. On the other hand, if it is diffuse, it is undefined.
- Finally, gynecomastia can be glandular or due to fat. If the swelling is the result of a cluster of fat cells, the surgeon will perform an adipomastia instead.

Gynecomastia: how the procedure works
Before any gynecomastia operation, you will see the surgeon for an initial consultation. This gives him the chance to learn about your needs, expectations and past history. He will examine the area to be treated and determine the appropriate treatment for you.
During the operation, the surgeon will perform several steps::
- First, he will perform liposuction on the fat on your breasts. In reality, he will make two small incisions under the armpit and in the sub-mammary fold. He will then remove the excess fat with the help of a thin cannula with a perforated foam tip
- He will then reduce your breast gland and make an incision around each areola. Only a very fine semi-circular scar will remain after the operation
- Finally, he re-tightens the skin. When you have a significant excess of skin and your skin is not elastic enough, the surgeon can remove the excess skin and reconstruct your chest
- At the end of the procedure, the practitioner closes the incisions using sutures and places a dressing on them
Gynecomastia: anaesthetic, duration and hospitalisation details
The gynecomastia operation is performed under general anaesthesia and without the need for hospitalization. You can return home on the same day.
This procedure takes about an hour, depending on the amount of breast gland to remove, but also for operations associated with correcting your gynecomastia.
Results: Before and after a gynecomastia procedure
The results of the gynecomastia treatment are immediately visible. The mammary gland will return to its normal appearance as a simple bud, and the excess fat will be removed by liposuction of the fat accumulation in the chest. The final results of the gynecomastia treatment will not be immediately visible following the procedure. The permanent outcome and disappearance of the breasts appear several weeks after the swelling has gone down and the excess skin has retracted . The breast is now smoothly in line with the pectoral muscle.
